What’s in YOUR Water? Becker Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is offering free nitrate testing Thursday, July 27 th at the Becker County Fair. High nitrate levels in drinking water can pose serious health risks to infants and pregnant women, and may also be an indicator of other contaminants. read more
New zebra mussel-sniffing K9s take aim at aquatic invasive species
With the fishing opener fast approaching, two new K9 dogs, trained to quickly locate zebra mussels on boats and trailers, will be helping the Department of Natural Resources prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. read more

DNR designates Straight River Groundwater Management Area
The Department of Natural Resources designated the state's third groundwater management area this week. The Straight River Groundwater Management Area in northwestern Minnesota includes parts of southern Clearwater, northeast Becker, southwest Hubbard and northwest Wadena counties. Cities within the boundary include Park Rapids, Osage and Ponsford. read more
Minnesota Ag Water Quality Certification Program tops 200,000 acres
Over 200,000 acres of Minnesota farmland are now enrolled in the Minnesota Agricultural Water Quality Certification Program (MAWQCP). The program marked the milestone today at Dave Lochen’s Shore Acres Farm near Kimball in Stearns County. Shore Acres Farm is a beef cattle and diversified crop operation growing seed and sweet corn, soybeans, and wheat. read more

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is seeking volunteers for its Citizen Stream and Citizen Lake Monitoring Programs. Program volunteers track water clarity, which helps the MPCA learn more about a lake or stream’s water quality. read more

Lowell Deede was on a mission to walk all of the roads in Becker County. While walking past the Buffalo River at a bridge crossing in April of 2015, the river looked beautiful. About a month later, he walked by the same bridge crossing and the river had turned to a muddy soup. read more
A new smartphone application, or “app,” is available as a free download for both iPhone and Android users to access soil survey information. The app, SoilWeb, combines online soil survey information with the GPS capabilities of smartphones.
